I braved the cluster fuck and came out with a confirmed order. $199? No fucking way was I talking myself out of that. All that changed when the Massdrop HD6xx was announced. I un-subbed from r/headphones for over a year because I didn’t want to temp/torture myself anymore. Nagra driver for macNow we’re talking!! The sample of flowing water in the beginning is now more than a sample… A river is actually flowing in front of me as the track starts moving. No sweat… Let’s try running my IPhone into the vintage amp on my 2 –channel setup (Pioneer SA-6500).First track was Nicolas Jaar – Colomb. My HD555s sounded considerably better. They were unremarkable… No depth, no low end, no soundstage. Now that the Crack is built, everything has started to burn in (brain included), and the Mimby is nice and warm I thought it was time for a post here with my initial impressions. The first thing I did when I unboxed these was plug them into my iPhone just to see what they sounded like. Kit purchased. Finally, after a ton of research and a generous Christmas bonus I bought the final piece of my new setup: Schiit Modi Multibit. I’m already hearing an amazing improvement in sound quality, even before adding the Crack and Mimby into the chain.2nd piece of gear to arrive was the Mimby. I’m thinking I should try planars at some point. At this point I’m stoked…. Each track gives me deep, teeth rattling bass without any muddiness or distortion. I finished out the track and went through some of my favorite low ender testers: Four Tet – Locked, Machinedrum – Gunshotta, Walsh – Bassfaced, Jessy Lanza – Never Enough, James Blake – A Limit to Your Love. I hear a sample in the background of a man breathing and swallowing that I never picked up before with the 555s.The intro is over and I’m patiently awaiting the first bass hit… Here it comes! YES!! I listen to a ton of electronic music and always felt the 555s were lacking in this department. As the track moves on the next thing I notice is the detail… Everything is crisp, clear, and sharp on a level I’ve never heard before. Hard to describe, but the sound was simply more opened up with the Mimby. Cleaner, deeper, more refined bass. I listened again, and while it was still fine, I wasn’t blown away, so I decided to set up a volume matched A/B test of Fleetwood Mac - Dreams through my vintage amp.Going back and forth between iPhone/Google Play, and USB Mimby/Flac was very surprising… Side by side the Mimby sounded way better! More depth and separation of instruments. I knew this unit needed a few hours of warmup time at least to reach it’s full potential, so I left it on overnight and throughout the next work day with my library shuffling through USB. It sounded fine and all, but it wasn’t a mind blowing change over my iPhone like going from the 555 to the 6xx was. This is all optional unless you want to customize your finish, like I did. Painting, finishing, and assembling the body/chassis/transformer bell took a couple hours in the evening over the course of a week. That said, I liked the sound of the iPhone just fine and didn’t feel like it was lacking until I heard something better. The last piece to arrive. After the A/B test I can see how the Mimby will allow the rest of my chain to stretch out and reach it’s full potential. The differences were subtle, but noticeable… Not regretting the purchase at all, even though my initial impression was underwhelming. Like a good book, I simply couldn’t put down the soldering iron. I’d say it took me right around 9 hours. I read every step 4 times at least, but still made a couple minor mistakes along the way that I caught before the final testing (soldered a couple joints before I was supposed to and missed a step early on in the power supply assembly). The highs were VERY shouty and fatiguing. I actually built this crazy tube amp! First impressions weren’t great for the Crack either. I had rudimentary soldering experience beforehand, and this video was a massive help for me:I was pretty fucking amazed when I turned the volume knob up for the first time and had sound come through my cans. Just keep in mind that you have the buy all the necessary tools, which I already had lying around my workbench. I would highly recommend this as a first DIY audio project, even if you don’t have prior build experience.
